A hearty and flavorful casserole featuring ground beef, mushrooms, and crispy tater tots, all made from scratch without condensed soup.

Ingredients

Meat

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • salt and pepper salt and pepper (to taste)

Dairy & Fats

  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 1 shallot shallot (chopped)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 3 tbsp gluten-free or all-purpose flour
  • 1-1/2 cups chicken or beef broth
  • 1 cup milk (skim)
  • 2 tbsp gluten-free tamari or soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 tsp smoked paprika

Tater Tots

  • 2 lb bag tater tots

Instructions 

  • Preheat oven as per tater tot bag instructions. Brown ground beef in a skillet, season with salt and pepper, then set aside.
  • Melt butter, sauté mushrooms and shallots for 3-5 minutes, then add garlic and cook 1 minute. Whisk in flour, cook 1 minute, then gradually add broth and milk, stirring constantly. Add tamari, ketchup, Worcestershire, and paprika; simmer until slightly thickened.
  • Stir in cooked beef, top with tater tots, and bake according to bag instructions. Let sit 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

Use a cast iron skillet for best results and ensure tater tots are evenly spread for crispiness.
